What it is
Fischer von Erlach's baroque court stables were converted and extended with new buildings, and the complex opened as the MuseumsQuartier in 2001. The white limestone cube of the Leopold Museum holds the largest Egon Schiele collection in the world, the dark basalt block of mumok is devoted to modern and contemporary art, and Kunsthalle Wien, ZOOM Children's Museum and the Architekturzentrum complete the site.
The main courtyard, with its colourful Enzi lounge seats, is a free public space and a popular meeting place on summer evenings.
Getting there by bus
U2 Museumsquartier station has an exit straight into the complex, and U2/U3 Volkstheater is on the opposite side, where trams 49 and bus 48A also stop. Bus 57A stops at Museumsquartier on the Getreidemarkt side.
The Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches museums face the MQ across the Ring, so they combine easily in one day.
