What it is
The house was built by the City of Vienna between 1983 and 1985 to Hundertwasser's ideas, with the architect Joseph Krawina, as a protest against straight lines and monotonous housing. There are no two identical windows, the floors inside are uneven and more than 200 trees and shrubs grow on the roofs and terraces.
It is still ordinary rented housing, so the flats cannot be visited; the facades are seen from the street. Opposite is the Hundertwasser Village, a small shopping arcade in the same style, and the Kunst Haus Wien museum, also by Hundertwasser, is five minutes away on Untere Weißgerberstraße.
Getting there by bus
Tram 1 stops at Hetzgasse, about 100 metres from the house, and at Löwengasse, where bus 4A also stops. The night bus N29 serves the same stops.
From the Ring, tram 1 runs here directly from Schwedenplatz in a few minutes.
