What it is
A market has been held here since the late 18th century; after the Wien river was vaulted over around 1900 it grew into today's long rows of green-roofed stands. Fruit, vegetables, cheese, spices, fish and specialities from across the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East are sold side by side with wine bars and cafés, and on Saturdays a large flea market takes over the area at the Kettenbrückengasse end.
On the Linke Wienzeile opposite, Otto Wagner's Majolikahaus and the Medallion House are two of the most photographed Art Nouveau facades in Vienna.
Getting there by bus
Bus 59A runs along the market with stops at Bärenmühldurchgang, Preßgasse and Schleifmühlgasse. The U4 stations Kettenbrückengasse and Karlsplatz sit at the two ends of the market, and Karlsplatz is also served by U1 and U2.
The market is closed on Sundays, when the stalls are shuttered but the restaurants on the edge often stay open.
