What it is
Fannie Bay Gaol opened in 1883 and served as the Territory's main prison until 1979, when inmates were moved to a new facility. The buildings tell the story of crime and punishment in the Top End, from the early settlement through the Second World War to the damage caused by Cyclone Tracy in 1974.
Visitors can walk through the cell blocks, the infirmary and the exercise yards, and see the gallows used for the last executions in the Northern Territory in 1952.
Getting there by bus
Route 4 stops at Dick Ward Dve after Allen St, only about 60 metres from the gaol. Route 6 also runs nearby, with the stop Philip St before Hinkler Cres around 200 metres away.
Both routes connect with the Darwin city centre and pass the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, so the two sights are easy to combine.
