What it is
Mindil Beach lies between the city centre and Fannie Bay, next to the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. During the dry season, the Mindil Beach Sunset Market fills the dunes behind the beach with food stalls from across Asia and the Pacific, arts and crafts and street performers, while crowds gather on the sand to watch the sun go down over the sea.
Swimming is not recommended for much of the year: box jellyfish and other marine stingers are present in Top End waters, especially between October and May, and saltwater crocodiles can occur along the coast.
Getting there by bus
The stop Gilruth Ave at Mindil Beach, served by routes 4, 6 and 19, is about 270 metres from the beach. Gilruth Ave at Gardens Oval (routes 4, 8 and 15) is a similar distance away.
These routes run from the Darwin city centre, including stops along Mitchell Street, so the trip takes only a few minutes. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is a pleasant walk further along the shore.
