What it is
MAGNT covers the art, culture and natural history of northern Australia. Its collections include Aboriginal art from Arnhem Land, the Tiwi Islands and the central deserts, as well as art and objects from Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The natural history displays feature the region's animals – including Sweetheart, a huge saltwater crocodile that became famous in the 1970s.
A gallery is dedicated to Cyclone Tracy, which destroyed much of Darwin on Christmas Day 1974, with photographs, recordings and personal stories. The museum is free to enter and stands by the water at Bullocky Point.
Getting there by bus
Routes 4 and 6 stop right outside at Museum & Art Gallery of NT, only about 50 metres from the entrance. Both routes run from the Darwin city centre along Gilruth Avenue, past Mindil Beach.
The museum can also be reached on foot from Mindil Beach and the Botanic Gardens in around 15 minutes, along the coastal path.
