What it is
The gardens date back to the late 19th century, when the young settlement experimented with tropical crops, and today cover more than 40 hectares between Gilruth Avenue and the Stuart Highway. They are named after George Brown, a long-serving Darwin mayor.
Paths lead through one of the largest palm collections in the region, a patch of monsoon rainforest with a waterfall, and areas devoted to the plants of the Top End's savannas and wetlands, including baobabs. The gardens also highlight the traditional uses of plants by the Larrakia and other Aboriginal peoples.
Getting there by bus
The main entrance on Gilruth Avenue is near the stops Gilruth Ave at Gardens Oval (routes 4, 8 and 15) and Gilruth Ave at Mindil Beach (routes 4, 6 and 19), both about 300 metres away.
On the other side of the gardens, routes 5, 8, 10, 21, 22 and 25 run along the Stuart Highway, with stops such as Stuart Hwy before Westralia St about 550 metres away. Mindil Beach is just across Gilruth Avenue.
