What it is
The gaol held men and women, debtors and political prisoners, including Countess Markievicz in 1919. An audio tour leads through the wings with figures and stories of real inmates, and the Governor's House holds a small radio museum, as the building housed Cork's first radio station in the 1920s.
The view from the front steps across the city to Shandon is one of the best in Cork.
Getting there by bus
The gaol is on Convent Avenue in Sunday's Well, about 25 minutes' walk west of the centre. Buses along Sunday's Well Road stop nearby (Sun's Well Road stop), or take a bus to University College Cork and cross the footbridge from Fitzgerald's Park, a ten-minute uphill walk.
It combines well with Fitzgerald's Park and the Cork Public Museum on the river below.
