What it is
William Burges's masterpiece is French Gothic on the outside and almost every surface inside is decorated — mosaics, stained glass, painted ceilings and carved figures. The golden angel on the eastern spire is a local landmark, and the spires can be seen from most of the city centre.
It is the Church of Ireland cathedral of the diocese and still an active church; concerts and choral evensong are regular.
Getting there by bus
The cathedral is on Bishop Street, about ten minutes' walk south-west of the Grand Parade across the South Gate Bridge. City buses along Bishop Street and Barrack Street stop right outside (St Fin Barre's Cathedral stop).
Elizabeth Fort is two minutes away on Barrack Street, so see both together.
