What it is

Officially the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, it mixes Renaissance, Romanesque and Gothic elements under a copper dome 44 metres high. Inside are mosaics, rose windows, Connemara marble floors and a mosaic of John F. Kennedy in a side chapel. Organ recitals are held through the summer.

It is a working Catholic cathedral, so visit outside Mass times.

Getting there by bus

The cathedral stands beside the Salmon Weir Bridge, about ten minutes' walk from Eyre Square along University Road. City buses on University Road and Newcastle Road stop at the Galway Cathedral stop by the bridge.

The University of Galway's quadrangle is five minutes further along the same road.
