What it is
The Prom runs from the Claddagh to Blackrock past Ladies Beach and Salthill Beach, with the Burren hills across the bay and Galway Atlantaquaria, the national aquarium, halfway along. Locals swim at the Blackrock tower all year round, and kicking the wall at the far end before turning back is a Galway ritual.
Sunsets over the bay are the reason to come in the evening; bring a windproof jacket.
Getting there by bus
Salthill is 3 km west of the centre — about 35 minutes on foot along the bay from the Spanish Arch, or a short ride on the city buses to Salthill, which stop along the Upper Salthill road a minute from the promenade (Salthill Upper stop).
Buses run frequently throughout the day and into the evening.
