What it is

Three floors of exhibits include the Galway hooker boat hanging in the atrium, medieval stonework from the town walls, the story of the Claddagh village and a gallery on the 1916–1923 period in the west of Ireland. Sea science and Galway's Atlantic marine research also get a floor.

The top floor windows give a fine view over the Spanish Arch and the Claddagh.

Getting there by bus

The museum is on Spanish Parade, directly behind the Spanish Arch and ten minutes' walk from Eyre Square. Buses along the docks stop at Spanish Arch, a minute away.

It is a good wet-weather option and closes on Mondays outside the summer season.
