What it is
The square was built over railway lines at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets and marked the centenary of Australian Federation. Its fractal-patterned facades house the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, which shows Australian and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and ACMI, the national museum of screen culture.
The sloping, paved plaza is used for festivals, big-screen broadcasts and public events, and the riverside terraces lead down to the Yarra and Birrarung Marr park.
Getting there by bus
The square sits at one of the busiest tram corners in the city. The Flinders Street Station/Swanston St stop (stop 13) right beside it is served by trams 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72, and trams 35, 70 and 75 stop on Flinders Street at stop 5 and at Russell St/Flinders St (stop 6).
Flinders Street Station, the hub of the metropolitan train network, is across the road, and Town Hall Station on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines is a short walk up Swanston Street.
