What it is
The Melbourne Cricket Club has played here since 1853, and the ground now holds around 100,000 spectators. It was the main stadium of the 1956 Olympic Games, hosted the first Test match in 1877, and stages the AFL Grand Final in September and the Boxing Day Test every December.
The Australian Sports Museum inside the stadium covers the history of Australian sport, and guided tours on non-event days visit the members' areas, the change rooms and the edge of the arena.
Getting there by bus
Tram 70 runs along Wellington Parade South and Olympic Boulevard and stops at Rod Laver Arena/MCG Gates 1-3 (stop 7B) and MCG Gates 4-7/John Cain Arena (stop 7C). Trams 48 and 75 stop at Jolimont Station-MCG/Wellington Pde (stop 11) on the northern side of Yarra Park.
Jolimont-MCG Station on the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines is about five minutes' walk across the park. On big match days extra services run and the walk from the city through Yarra Park is popular.
