What it is
The gardens were laid out from the 1850s, and their main paths are said to follow the pattern of the Union Jack. The large elms lining them are among the finest in a city where many European elms have survived disease that killed them elsewhere.
Cooks' Cottage was built in 1755 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, for the parents of James Cook. It was dismantled, shipped to Melbourne and rebuilt here in 1934, with an English cottage garden around it. The Conservatory, opened in 1930, shows seasonal flower displays.
