What it is
The cathedral was designed by the English architect William Butterfield and consecrated in 1891; its spires were added later, in the 1920s and 1930s, to a design by the Sydney architect John Barr. The banded stonework and the richly tiled interior are typical of Butterfield's work.
The church stands at what has long been the symbolic centre of the city, across the intersection from Flinders Street Station and Federation Square, and visitors can usually step inside outside service times.
Getting there by bus
The Collins St/Swanston St stop (stop 11), a few steps north of the cathedral, is served by trams 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72, and the Flinders Street Station/Swanston St stop (stop 5) right outside by trams 35, 70 and 75.
Flinders Street Station is across the road, and Town Hall Station on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines opens onto Swanston Street a block away.
