What it is
The Shrine was completed in 1934 as a memorial to the men and women of Victoria who served in the First World War, and it now honours all Australians who have served in war and peacekeeping. Its design draws on the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Parthenon.
In the Sanctuary, an opening in the roof lets a ray of sunlight fall on the word "Love" in the Stone of Remembrance at 11 am on 11 November. The balconies give a long view up St Kilda Road to the city, and galleries below tell the stories of those who served.
Getting there by bus
The Shrine of Remembrance/St Kilda Rd stop (stop 19) is served by trams 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 from Swanston Street; tram 58 joins them at the Anzac Station/St Kilda Rd stop (stop 20) a little further south. Bus 605 stops at Anzac Station/Domain Rd and bus 604 at Anzac Station/St Kilda Rd.
Anzac Station on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines is about five minutes' walk from the Shrine.
