What it is
The market was officially opened in 1878 and is the last of the great 19th-century markets still trading in central Melbourne. Its Victorian and Edwardian sheds and halls cover several hectares between Elizabeth, Victoria, Peel and Queen Streets, and part of the site was once the city's first cemetery.
Besides fresh produce, the stalls sell clothing, souvenirs and street food, and the market is a lively place to see everyday Melbourne. Trading days vary through the week, so it is worth checking before you go.
