What it is
A railway station has stood on this site since 1854, when Australia's first steam railway opened from here to Sandridge, today's Port Melbourne. The present Edwardian building, designed by railway employees J. W. Fawcett and H. P. C. Ashworth, was completed in 1910 and stretches along Flinders Street beside the Yarra.
The row of clocks above the main entrance at the corner of Swanston Street, showing the next departures, gave Melburnians the saying "meet me under the clocks".
Getting there by bus
Almost every metropolitan train line passes through the station, including the Alamein, Belgrave, Glen Waverley, Hurstbridge, Lilydale and Mernda lines as well as the Sandringham, Werribee and Williamstown lines. Outside the main entrance, the Flinders Street Station/Swanston St stops are served by trams 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 (stop 13) and 35, 70 and 75 (stop 5).
At the Elizabeth Street end, trams 19, 57 and 59 start from Flinders Street Station/Elizabeth St (stop 1).
