What it is
The gallery was founded in 1861. Its bluestone building by Roy Grounds opened in 1968, and visitors enter through an arch in a glass wall with water running down it. Inside, the Great Hall is covered by a stained-glass ceiling by Leonard French, one of the largest of its kind in the world.
The collection spans European old masters, Asian art, decorative arts, fashion, photography and contemporary work, and the gallery hosts large international exhibitions. Australian art is shown separately at the Ian Potter Centre on Federation Square.
Getting there by bus
The Arts Precinct/St Kilda Rd stop (stop 14) is right in front of the gallery and is served by trams 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72, all running down St Kilda Road from Swanston Street. Tram 1 also stops at Arts Precinct/Sturt St (stop 17) behind the gallery.
Bus 605 stops at Southbank Theatre on Southbank Boulevard. From Flinders Street Station the walk across Princes Bridge takes about ten minutes.
