What it is
Convicts transported from Britain to Western Australia built the prison from local limestone in the 1850s, and it remained a maximum-security jail long after transportation ended. The long cell block, the gatehouse and the walls are among the largest surviving structures of the convict era.
Guided tours cover the cell blocks and prison life, and the tunnels tour goes down into the water tunnels dug beneath the site.
Getting there by bus
Route 160 stops on Hampton Road before and after Knutsford Street, close to the back of the prison grounds; routes 160, 502 and 915 also stop on High Street, from where the gatehouse on The Terrace is a short walk uphill.
Fremantle station, the end of the Fremantle line from Perth, is about fifteen minutes away on foot through the town centre.
