What it is
The zoo is laid out in themed areas such as the Australian Bushwalk, the African Savannah and an Asian rainforest section. Native animals including kangaroos, koalas, numbats and other threatened Western Australian species are a focus, and the zoo runs breeding programmes for several of them.
The mature gardens date back to the zoo's early years, and the grounds are compact enough to walk around comfortably in a few hours.
Getting there by bus
Routes 30 and 31 stop at Labouchere Rd Perth Zoo, right at the entrance, and run from Perth Busport in the city. Route 34 stops on Mill Point Road near Mends Street.
A scenic alternative is the ferry from the Elizabeth Quay Jetty to the Mends St Jetty in South Perth, from where the zoo is about a ten-minute walk up Mends Street.
