What it is
The mint was founded as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint during the gold rushes of the 1890s, when gold from Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie flowed into Perth. It still refines gold and produces bullion coins and bars, and the original building is one of the best-preserved mints of its era.
The visitor centre has exhibitions on the gold rush and on coin-making, a gold pour in the historic melting house, and a collection of large gold nuggets.
Getting there by bus
Routes 111 and 160 stop at Hay St Before Hill St, almost at the gate, and the free Red CAT has its Hay St Perth Mint stop a short walk away. Adelaide Terrace, one block south, is served by many more routes at Adelaide Tce Before Hill St.
From the Elizabeth Quay or Perth Busport area, the Red CAT is the simplest free option along Hay Street to the east end of the city.
