What it is
Opened in 2002 at the entrance to Fremantle Harbour, the museum tells the story of Western Australia's relationship with the Indian Ocean, from Aboriginal sea country and early Dutch voyages to trade, fishing, the navy and recreation. Australia II, which won the America's Cup in 1983, is displayed in the main gallery.
Next door the decommissioned submarine HMAS Ovens can be visited on guided tours, and the related Shipwreck Galleries are a short walk away on Cliff Street.
Getting there by bus
Fremantle station, the terminus of the Fremantle line from Perth, is the closest stop: from there the museum is a walk of about ten minutes west along Victoria Quay. The station's bus stands serve many routes, including 107, 111, 160, 511 and 512.
Routes stopping at Market St Before High St are a similar distance away, past the Round House end of town.
