What it is
The building was designed by Charles Tiffin, the colonial architect, in the decade after Queensland became a separate colony in 1859. Its arcaded verandas and shuttered windows adapt the European style to the subtropical climate, and the roof is clad in copper. The Legislative Assembly still sits here; the former Legislative Council chamber has been kept although Queensland abolished its upper house in 1922.
When parliament is not sitting, free guided tours show the chambers and the library, and visitors can watch sessions from the public gallery.
