What it is
Founded in 1862, the museum moved into its present building in the Queensland Cultural Centre in 1986. Its galleries cover Queensland's fossils and dinosaurs, the animals of the reef and rainforest, and the history and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The interactive science centre, SparkLab, is aimed at families.
The museum shares the Cultural Centre with the Queensland Art Gallery, the State Library and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, so several institutions can be combined in one visit.
Getting there by bus
Cultural Centre busway station is right outside the museum and is one of the busiest stops in Brisbane, served among others by routes 60, 100, 120, 192, 196, 199 and 200. Trains stop at South Brisbane station, a short walk south.
From the city centre, the walk across the Victoria Bridge takes about ten minutes.
