What it is
The collection spans Australian art from the colonial period to today, a major collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and European and Asian works. The original building, with its columned portico, faces Art Gallery Road, while Naala Badu, designed by the Japanese firm SANAA, steps down towards Woolloomooloo Bay.
The gallery hosts the annual Archibald Prize for portraiture, along with large temporary exhibitions. A former naval oil tank beneath the new building has been turned into an exhibition space.
Getting there by bus
Route 441 stops right outside at Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery Rd, and on the opposite side of the road. Route 311 runs along Bourke Street and Cowper Wharf Road in Woolloomooloo, below the new building.
St James Station (T2, T3 and T8 lines) and Martin Place Station (T4 line and Metro line M1) are both around eight to ten minutes' walk away across the Domain.
