What it is
The Danish architect Jørn Utzon won the design competition in 1957, and the building opened sixteen years later. Under its sail-like roofs, covered in more than a million cream and white tiles, are several venues, including the Concert Hall and the Joan Sutherland Theatre, which host opera, ballet, orchestral music, theatre and contemporary shows.
The broad forecourt and the promenade around the point give open views across the harbour to the Harbour Bridge and the Royal Botanic Garden next door. The building was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2007.
Getting there by bus
The Opera House is a short walk along the eastern side of Circular Quay. Circular Quay Station, on the City Circle (T2, T3 and T8 lines), is about ten minutes away on foot, and ferries from all routes, F1 to F9, leave from the wharves next to it.
Buses 304, 343 and 373 use Circular Quay, Alfred St, Stand A, and routes 333 and 396 stop at Stand B on the same street.
