What it is
The cathedral was designed by William Wardell and replaced an earlier church on the site that burned down in 1865. It is one of the largest churches in Australia, with long naves, rich stained-glass windows and a crypt whose floor is decorated with a large terrazzo mosaic.
The building stands on the edge of Hyde Park and the Domain, and its forecourt on College Street looks across to the park and the Archibald Fountain.
Getting there by bus
St James Station, on the City Circle (T2, T3 and T8 lines), is just across the road at the northern end of Hyde Park. Routes 504 and 506 stop at St Mary's Cathedral, St Marys Rd, beside the church, and many buses use the St James Station stands on Elizabeth Street.
Martin Place Station, on the T4 line and Metro line M1, is about five minutes' walk away.
