What it is
The sandstone building houses collections of minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, Australian animals and birds, as well as galleries on First Nations cultures and the Pacific. The museum was extensively renovated and reopened in 2020 with a large new entrance hall, the Crystal Hall, on William Street.
The museum is also a research institution, and its scientists work on Australian biodiversity. Temporary exhibitions are held regularly, and the museum hosts the annual Eureka Prizes for science.
