What it is
Manly sits on a narrow strip of land between the harbour and the Pacific, and its ocean beach runs north from South Steyne to Queenscliff, with North Steyne in between. The beach is popular for surfing and swimming between the flags, and the promenade is busy with walkers, runners and cyclists.
At the southern end, a path leads around the headland to Shelly Beach, a sheltered cove in a marine reserve that is good for snorkelling. The Corso, lined with shops and cafés, connects the beach with Manly Wharf.
Getting there by bus
The classic way to arrive is by ferry: route F1 runs from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf, at the harbour end of The Corso, from where the beach is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk. Many bus routes, such as 141, 142, 144, 161, 162 and 199, use the stands around Manly Wharf.
On the beachfront itself, routes 166 and 167 stop at North Steyne SLSC, Pine St, and on North Steyne at Pacific St, and route 199 stops on Pittwater Road at Pine St.
