What it is
Markets have been held in Haymarket since the nineteenth century, and the current hall, with the words "Vegetable Market A.D. 1909" still carved over one of its entrances, was built as the city's produce market. Today hundreds of stalls sell fruit and vegetables, seafood, clothes, accessories and Australian souvenirs.
The Market City shopping centre occupies the floors above. Chinatown, with its gates on Dixon Street, and the Chinese Garden of Friendship at the southern end of Darling Harbour are a few minutes' walk away.
Getting there by bus
The Paddy's Markets light rail stop on line L1 is right beside the hall on Hay Street, and Capitol Square is the next stop. Central Station, the city's main rail hub with suburban, intercity and regional trains and Metro line M1, is about five minutes' walk away.
Many buses stop at Central Station, Railway Square, including routes 412, 413, 422, 423, 426, 428, 431, 433, 440, 470, 480 and 501, and routes 438X, 440 and 461X also stop at Haymarket Light Rail Stop, Rawson Pl.
