What it is
Howth is the easiest escape from the city: a fishing village with a harbour, a market at weekends and the Cliff Walk, which loops around the headland past the lighthouse with views to Ireland's Eye and, on a clear day, the Wicklow Mountains. The shortest green loop takes about two hours.
Wear proper shoes — the path is narrow and muddy in places — and stop for fish and chips on the West Pier on the way back.
Getting there by bus
The DART from Connolly, Tara Street or Pearse takes about 25 minutes to Howth station at the harbour, and Dublin Bus routes from the city centre and Sutton run to Howth village and up to the Summit; the Howth Church stop is near the start of the harbour walk.
The cliff path starts at the end of the East Pier or from the Summit car park, where the bus turns around.
