What it is

The star exhibits are the Ardagh Chalice, the Tara Brooch and the Cross of Cong in the Treasury, the largest collection of Bronze Age gold in Europe, and the eerily preserved Iron Age bog bodies. Viking Dublin and medieval Ireland have their own galleries.

The museum's other Dublin branches — Decorative Arts & History at Collins Barracks and Natural History on Merrion Street — are also free.

Getting there by bus

The museum is on Kildare Street, two minutes from Trinity College and Grafton Street. Buses along Nassau Street and Kildare Street stop at the door (Kildare Street stop), and the Dawson Luas stop is around the corner.

The National Gallery and the National Library are on the same block, so half a day covers all three.
