What it is
The market began with market gardeners selling from carts and has grown into a hall of some seventy stalls with fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bakeries and delicatessens, many of them run by the same families for generations. It reflects the many communities that settled in Adelaide, from German and Italian to Greek and Vietnamese.
Adelaide's Chinatown is directly next to the market on Moonta Street, and the surrounding Gouger Street is known for its restaurants.
Getting there by bus
The Victoria Square tram stop on the Glenelg line is a couple of minutes' walk away, and many buses stop on Grote Street right beside the market, among them the 98A and 98C city loop and routes 720 and 721.
Further routes stop on the west side of Victoria Square, so the market is easy to reach from almost anywhere in the city.
