What it is
Rundle Street was one of the original streets of Light's plan and became the city's commercial heart in the 19th century. When it was closed to traffic in 1976 it was one of Australia's first pedestrian malls. The Adelaide Arcade of 1885 and the Regent Arcade lead off it, and the Mall's Balls, two large stainless-steel spheres, are a traditional meeting point.
At its eastern end the mall continues as Rundle Street, with cafés and restaurants towards the East End.
Getting there by bus
Grenfell Street, one block south, is a major bus corridor: Stop F2, Stop G1 and Stop G2 on the north side are served by many routes, among them 500, 501, 502, 506, 530 and 541, and the O-Bahn express routes also run along it.
The Art Gallery tram stop on North Terrace is a few minutes' walk north through one of the arcades, and the mall's western end meets King William Street with the Glenelg tram.
