What it is
The zoo keeps a wide range of animals in grounds that still include heritage-listed Victorian buildings and old trees. Giant pandas from China have been one of its main attractions since 2009, alongside Sumatran tigers, orangutans and Australian wildlife in the walk-through aviaries and native habitats.
The zoo is run by the non-profit Zoos SA, which also manages the Monarto Safari Park outside Adelaide.
Getting there by bus
Buses stop on Frome Road right by the entrance at Stop 2 Frome Rd, served by routes 271 and 273, the 98A and 98C city loop and routes 235, 238 and 239.
The Botanic Gardens tram stop on North Terrace is about fifteen minutes' walk south through the Botanic Garden, and a riverside path along the Torrens leads to the zoo from the Adelaide Oval and the city.
