What it is
The Mortlock Wing was the colony's first purpose-built public library. Its hall is lined with two levels of wrought-iron balconies and bookshelves under a glass lantern roof, and today it is used for exhibitions on South Australian history and for events. The library's modern main building next door houses the reading rooms and collections.
The library is part of the North Terrace cultural precinct, next to the South Australian Museum and close to the Migration Museum on Kintore Avenue.
Getting there by bus
The Art Gallery tram stop on North Terrace is about 60 metres away, and buses along North Terrace stop at Stop F1 North Tce on the north side, served by routes 170, 174, 176, 178 and 281.
King William Road, a short walk west, has many more routes at Stop A2 and Stop A3, and Adelaide Railway Station is just beyond it.
