What it is
Opened in 1986 as one of the first museums of its kind in Australia, it covers migration from the first British settlers to post-war arrivals and refugees, as well as the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal people. The buildings themselves have a long history: they served for decades as the colony's Destitute Asylum, which housed the poor, the elderly and the sick.
The museum sits just behind the State Library, a short walk from North Terrace.
